Myer Spring-Summer Fashion 2006
It was a spring/summer runway extravaganza worthy of WC Fields's erstwhile employer, the Ziegfeld Follies.
Last night's Myer spring/summer runway event eclipsed last week's David Jones event, if not in star pulling power then at least in catwalk chutzpah.
No Mischa Barton for Myer, or the kind of international coverage in which DJs has basked in the Barton aftermath. Parading before Myer's 500 guests - including Miranda and Barry Otto, Carla and Eddie McGuire, Lara Bingle, Jake Wall, Toni Pearen and Robyn Nevin - was a cast of 108 performers on a 35-metre by 18-metre runway, which featured a faux 747 fuselage.
Those on show at the estimated $1 million dress-fest included a former Miss Universe, 10 NRL players, 22 dancers, 10 fan-dancing lingerie-clad ballerinas, 10 children, a half dozen Japanese spitz - and the model Michelle Leslie.
Produced by the flamboyant Sydney party planner Tony Assness and closing with a remix of Donna Summer's 1977 hit I Feel Love, the show was staged inside the Royal Hall of Industries at Fox Studios and evoked the wild party atmosphere of the Mardi Gras and Sleaze Ball dance parties to which the venue has been home.
Even the children seemed to be on a high. "They spill off the plane and they're very excited. It's like they've had too much red cordial," said a Myer spokeswoman, Tracy Baker, of the opening sequence featuring 10 little girls in Leona Edmiston's new Little Leona children's wear line.
On August 3 last year, Leslie was just one of many low-profile local models who paraded up and down a man-made beach in Martin Place for Myer's spring/summer 2005-06 show. Last night's presentation fell just short of one year since Leslie was arrested in Bali on possession of two ecstasy tablets, subsequently igniting a media storm when she turned up to court in a burqa, claiming she had converted to Islam.
There were no burqas, but the term "volume" does nevertheless get a big run for summer in a swag of bubble skirts and boxy, cropped jackets.
The dress will be the biggest fashion story of the summer, with Myer's myriad offerings including items from camilla and marc, Toni Maticevski, Leona Edmiston, Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester, fashionassassin, Alex Perry, Carla Zampatti, Charlie Brown, Stella McCartney and Roland Mouret.
